Introduction

By Paul Caputo

Virtually equidistant between Palermo and Agrigento, the appellation of Sambuca di Sicilia DOC covers around 130 hectares of vineyard. As with other small appellations in Sicily, a number of grape varieties are permitted. Whites can be produced with either Ansonica, Chardonnay, Grecanico Dorato, Grillo or Sauvignon Blanc, while reds may be produced with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nero d’Avola, Sangiovese or Syrah. Despite being created in 1995, there is nobody I know of producing wines under the Sambuca di Sicilia denomination.
