Bred by Swiss grape geneticist Valentin Blattner in the canton of Jura, this variety is relatively late to mature and produces a high yield. The berries are characterised by a thin waxy layer that covers their skin, providing protection against winter frosts and viticultural disease. Today, Cabernet Jura is cultivated in the canton of its creation as well as across parts of Switzerland’s German Speaking region and in the cantons of Geneva and Ticino. There are also small quantities of the variety grown in Belgium.
Wines from the Cabernet Jura grape share many traits with its parent, Cabernet Sauvignon; they tend to be full bodied and fruity with a rich, ruby-red colour.
