Malvasia Nera

Malvasia Nera, also known as Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, or Malvasia Nera di Lecce is an important black variety grown in Puglia and increasingly in Tuscany. It produces rich red wines with aromas of black fruit and high acidity while in Chianti it contributes perfume and aroma to the Sangiovese driven blend.

Synonyms: Malvasia Nera di Brindisi, Malvasia Nera di Lecce

Parents: Negroamaro,  Malvasia Bianca Lunga

Salento IGP “Dieci Anni” Malvasia Nera
Feudi di Guagnano, Puglia, Italy
2017
Malvasia Nera (100%)
“Earthy nose set in layers of black berry fruit; the palate is soft and fleshy wine, well balanced balanced and extremely fun. Fresh, simple, but very attractive. A nice advert for the variety.”

Toscana IGP “Arteliquida”
Toscana IGP “Arteliquida”
Azienda Agricola Montechiaro di Alessandro Griccioli, Tuscany, Italy
2016
Malvasia Nera (100%)
“Delicious fragrance of cut flowers and fresh, ripe cherry. This boasts a complex nose that delivers notes of orange peel and citrus as well as helpings of berry fruit. In the mouth it's dry, but light and energetic. Bio-dynamically farmed, low production and well worth a go, if only for the rare example of mono varietal Tuscan Malvasia Nera.”

Salice Salentino DOC “Cupone” Riserva
Salice Salentino DOC “Cupone” Riserva
Feudi di Guagnano, Puglia, Italy
2016
Negroamaro (90%) Malvasia Nera (10%)
“Takes a while to open up. First impressions note waves of black fruit, Christmas spice and a kick of black pepper. Very complex, with suggestions of tobacco and cocoa alongside a herbal streak of balsam and Mediterranean plant. With time oak influenced aromas push themselves to the fore. Clearly a very well made wine showing balance and elegance. One of the best Salice Salentino wines around.”

Salice Salentino DOC
Leone De Castris, Puglia, Italy
2016
Negroamaro (90%) Malvasia Nera (10%)
“From the layers of prune and black cherry emerges a restrained but discernible coat of vanilla to compliment more subtle suggestions of pepper, earth and cocoa. Medium bodied and fruit forward, but possessing the typical grip of Negroamaro, this is a solid wine. Evolving nicely a few years from the vintage.”

Salice Salentino DOC Riserva
Salice Salentino DOC Riserva
Cantine Cosimo Taurino, Puglia, Italy
2010
Negroamaro (90%) Malvasia Nera (10%)
“Historically this is one of the iconic wines of Salice Salentino. On the nose is shows classical notes of red and black berry fruit, black pepper and a touch of wild herb. The palate is equally traditional, with a fleshy, unpretentious mouthfeel and with almost ten years of age to it the fruit has taken on layers of complexity - evolved fruit with a sense of leather of smoke.”

Salice Salentino DOC “Donna Lisa” Riserva
Salice Salentino DOC “Donna Lisa” Riserva
Leone De Castris, Puglia, Italy
2015 2014
Negroamaro (90%) Malvasia Nera (10%)
“Some primary notes of ripe black fruit supported by further aromas of dried prune, orange peel and fruitcake. A rich, intense fruit forward style of Salice Salentino, its velvet texture smooths the way for warm splashes of alcohol. Well balanced and well made, this still has many years ahead of it. Just starting to accumulate tertiary notes of earth and pepper.”

Salice Salentino DOC “Le Pozzelle”
Salice Salentino DOC “Le Pozzelle”
Candido, Puglia, Italy
2018
Negroamaro (95%) Malvasia Nera (5%)
“On the deeper side of the rosé spectrum, Le Pozzelle is one of the region's classic pink wines. Ripe strawberry character with floral notes as well a subtle touche of rosemary. Fresh, with faint hints of apple, bitter herb and sea salt as well as plenty of red berry fruit. Finishes dry and balanced.”
