Bordô is a rare red grape variety native to southern Brazil, particularly in the Serra Gaúcha region, where it has traditionally been used for rustic table wines and grape juice. Despite its name, it is not related to Bordeaux varieties. DNA research has identified it as Vitis labrusca, or possibly a hybrid, more closely aligned with North American species. Bordô wines are deeply coloured and intensely aromatic, often showing notes of wild berries and candied grape, with a foxy character typical of labrusca types, though modern producers are beginning to explore its potential in fresher, more controlled expressions.
