Trebbiano Toscano

White grape variety found all over Tuscany and central Italy. It's known as Procanico in Umbria.

Synonyms: Ugni Blanc

Trebbiano Toscano

Trebbiano Toscano's contemporary history is one of high volume and underwhelming results. Its ability to give high yields, low sugar and high acidity has made an appealing choice for making large quantities of inexpensive wine. In France the same variety (Ugni Blanc) is used for the production of Cognac for these same qualities.

Trebbiano Toscano is the same grape as Ugni Blanc in France.

A lot of damage has been done to Trebbiano Toscano's reputation in recent years, and it's unlikely this can be reversed by a handful of good wines. Nevertheless, there is a small movement of producers seeking to present the variety in a different way, notably through organic viticulture, low yields and careful canopy management.
