Verdeca

Verdeca is a white grape variety grown in Puglia, particularly in the Salento area where it provides a ripe but fresh partner for the region’s typical seafood.

Verdeca

Verdeca is an ancient white grape variety native to southern Italy, particularly the Puglia region. Its history traces back to Roman times, where it was prized for its ability to produce fresh, light wines in the warm Mediterranean climate. Historically, Verdeca was a key component in Vermouth production due to its neutral and fresh characteristics. In recent decades, Verdeca has experienced a revival, with a focus on higher-quality, single-varietal wines that emphasize its potential for aromatic and crisp expressions.

Verdeca’s precise genetic origins are not well-documented, but it is thought to have ties to Greek or Balkan varieties, given its historical trade routes and influence in the region. It is often confused with Verdicchio due to similarities in name, though the two grapes are genetically distinct. Verdeca is sometimes referred to simply as “Verde” in local dialects.
