Caiarossa is owned by the Albada Jelgersma family, who also own Château Giscours and Château du Tertre in Bordeaux. Their investment in Caiarossa has elevated the estate’s reputation, integrating Bordeaux expertise with Tuscan winemaking traditions. The winery operates under a biodynamic approach, overseen by a dedicated team committed to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking.
Founded in 1998, Caiarossa was conceived as a forward-thinking estate, embracing biodynamic principles from the outset. The property was acquired by the Albada Jelgersma family in 2004, reinforcing its commitment to quality winemaking. The name ‘Caiarossa’ reflects the red soils of the estate, a defining feature of its terroir.
Caiarossa is located in Riparbella, near the Tuscan coast, within the Val di Cecina. The estate benefits from maritime influences, which moderate temperatures and contribute to balanced ripening. Though not part of Chianti Classico or Bolgheri, it produces wines under the Toscana IGT classification, allowing for creative blending.
The estate spans 70 hectares, with approximately 40 hectares under vine. Soils vary significantly, combining clay, limestone, and volcanic elements, which influence the complexity of the wines. Caiarossa cultivates a mix of French and Italian varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Alicante. Biodynamic practices guide vineyard management, enhancing soil health and ecological balance.
Caiarossa follows a non-interventionist philosophy, using gravity-fed winemaking to preserve fruit purity. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in concrete, stainless steel, and wooden vats. Ageing is carefully managed with a mix of large oak barrels and barriques, depending on the wine’s structure and vintage conditions. The approach emphasises freshness, elegance, and terroir expression.
The flagship wine, Caiarossa, is a complex blend of Bordeaux and Mediterranean varieties, showcasing depth and ageing potential. Pergolaia, predominantly Sangiovese, offers a more traditional Tuscan profile with bright acidity and red fruit character. Aria di Caiarossa provides an approachable introduction to the estate, while limited-production whites and rosés add diversity to the portfolio.
Caiarossa offers guided tours and tastings by appointment, allowing visitors to explore the winery’s biodynamic practices and diverse terroirs.
