Cantina Terlano

Cantina Terlano, located in the village of Terlan in Alto Adige, is one of Italy’s most prestigious wine cooperatives, renowned for producing long-lived, mineral-driven white wines, especially from Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Its volcanic soils and rigorous standards make it a benchmark for Alpine white wines.

Cantina Terlano is a cooperative founded in 1893 and is owned by its approximately 143 member growers. Despite its cooperative model, the winery maintains exacting quality standards under the leadership of longtime winemaker Rudi Kofler. His tenure since 2003 has seen Terlano solidify its reputation for producing some of Italy’s most age-worthy white wines, with a transparent link to terroir and precision viticulture.

Founded in 1893, Cantina Terlano was one of the first cooperatives in the region, formed by 24 growers seeking to improve quality and commercial reach. While the cooperative structure remains, the winery began focusing on premium wine production in the latter 20th century. Its archive wine project, storing small quantities of each vintage for decades, has underscored the aging potential of its whites and helped elevate its international status. Rudi Kofler's arrival marked a renewed emphasis on site selection and minimal intervention.

Cantina Terlano is located in the village of Terlan (Terlano), nestled on the western side of the Adige Valley between Bolzano and Merano. The area is part of the Alto Adige Terlano DOC. The vineyards sit on steep, east-facing slopes between 250 and 900 meters elevation. The soils are dominated by quartz- and feldspar-rich volcanic porphyry, a key factor in the minerality and longevity of the wines.

The cooperative farms around 190 hectares of vineyards, all situated in the Terlano area. These include prestigious sites such as Vorberg, Kreuth, and Winkl. The focus is on sustainable viticulture, with careful canopy management and low yields. Elevation, diurnal temperature variation, and volcanic soils contribute to vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. Each grower follows strict guidelines to maintain quality, and grapes are selected parcel by parcel for the top-tier wines.

Cantina Terlano employs a philosophy of minimal intervention to preserve varietal purity and site expression. Whites are typically fermented in stainless steel or large old oak barrels, depending on the wine. Lees aging is critical—some of the top whites spend over a year on the lees to build texture and complexity. Reds are handled with equal care, but it is the whites—especially Pinot Bianco—that form the core identity. The winery’s strict selection process results in three tiers: Classic, Selection, and Rarity.

Cantina Terlano is celebrated for its Pinot Bianco “Vorberg,” a structured, mineral-driven wine with long aging potential. Other standouts include “Kreuth” Chardonnay and “Winkl” Sauvignon Blanc. The pinnacle of the range is the “Terlaner I” cuvée and the ultra-rare “Rarity” bottlings—aged for over a decade on lees before release. These demonstrate Terlano’s belief in the longevity and evolution of its white wines. Reds, such as Lagrein and Pinot Noir, are also produced with elegance, but the whites dominate in acclaim.

Cantina Terlano welcomes visitors to its modern tasting room, which offers panoramic views and guided tastings of its full range. The on-site wine archive, where decades-old bottles are preserved, is a highlight for enthusiasts interested in wine longevity. Tours typically include a visit to the cellar and can be arranged by appointment. The experience is tailored to showcase both the unique terroir and the winery’s meticulous craftsmanship.
