★★★★★

Château Lynch-Bages is a Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac, Bordeaux, known for producing powerful, age-worthy red wines with a distinctive combination of richness and finesse. Château Lynch-Bages has been owned by the Cazes family since 1939. Jean-Charles Cazes initially revitalized the estate, while his grandson, Jean-Michel Cazes, propelled it to international recognition. Today, his son, Jean-Charles Cazes, continues the family’s commitment to quality and innovation. The estate is part of the Cazes family's broader wine portfolio, which includes Domaine des Sénéchaux in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Xisto in Portugal.

The estate’s origins date back to the 18th century when it was owned by the Lynch family, of Irish descent. It was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Médoc classification, but its reputation steadily rose throughout the 20th century. Under the Cazes family, the estate embraced modernization, expanding its cellar facilities and refining its style to produce wines that rival those of higher-ranked crus.

Château Lynch-Bages is located just west of Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc. The vineyards are situated on the gravelly plateau of Bages, an area known for its deep, well-draining soils. This terroir, combined with Pauillac’s maritime climate, provides ideal conditions for growing structured, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate covers 100 hectares, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), along with Merlot (19%), Cabernet Franc (4%), and Petit Verdot (2%). Sustainable vineyard practices, including cover cropping and precision viticulture, are used to enhance soil health. A new gravity-fed winery, completed in 2020, further optimizes fruit selection and vinification precision.

Lynch-Bages blends tradition with modern technology. The new winery allows for parcel-by-parcel vinification, enhancing terroir expression. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled vats, followed by aging in 70% new French oak for around 18 months. The goal is to craft wines with depth, concentration, and refined tannins, ensuring both approachability in youth and longevity in bottle.

The grand vin, Château Lynch-Bages, is known for its bold, structured style, featuring deep cassis, graphite, and spice notes. It is a benchmark Pauillac, capable of aging for decades. The second wine, Echo de Lynch-Bages, offers a more accessible expression with earlier drinking potential. Blanc de Lynch-Bages, a rare white Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, showcases freshness and precision.

The estate offers immersive experiences, including technical tastings, vineyard tours, and insights into its state-of-the-art winery. Nearby, the Cazes family operates the luxury hotel and restaurant Château Cordeillan-Bages, offering fine dining and wine-pairing experiences. Visitors can also explore the charming village of Bages, restored by the family to celebrate Médoc’s wine culture.
