The estate has been owned by Daniel and Florence Cathiard since 1990. They have invested heavily in quality improvements, including biodynamic viticulture and gravity-flow winemaking. Their daughter, Mathilde Thomas, manages the adjacent Caudalie spa brand, while Fabien Teitgen serves as technical director, overseeing vineyard management and winemaking.
The estate’s origins trace back to the 14th century when it was part of the noble Bosq family's holdings. It was later acquired by George Smith in the 18th century, who gave the château its name and developed its reputation. The Louis Eschenauer trading house owned it for much of the 20th century before selling to the Cathiards, who have since transformed it into one of Bordeaux’s leading estates.
Located in Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Graves, Smith Haut Lafitte benefits from the region’s distinctive gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention. The estate sits just south of Bordeaux city, with vineyards on a gentle rise offering optimal sun exposure.
The 78-hectare vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot for red wines, while Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Gris make up the whites. The estate follows biodynamic principles, using compost made on-site, employing horse plowing in select plots, and promoting biodiversity to enhance vineyard health.
The winemaking philosophy balances tradition with innovation. The estate uses gravity-fed vinification, whole-cluster fermentation for some reds, and extensive barrel aging. For whites, barrel fermentation and bâtonnage (lees stirring) enhance richness. The estate also employs a proprietary natural yeast culture sourced from its own vineyards to promote site expression.
Smith Haut Lafitte is known for powerful yet refined reds, with deep fruit, minerality, and aging potential. The grand vin, Château Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge, is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, offering complexity and structure. The white, Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, is one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after dry whites, known for its intensity and precision. The second wines, Le Petit Haut Lafitte (red) and Les Hauts de Smith (red and white), offer earlier drinking expressions.
The estate offers in-depth tours focusing on vineyard biodiversity, cellar technology, and barrel aging. The nearby Les Sources de Caudalie, a luxury hotel and vinotherapy spa, provides an immersive wine and wellness experience. Tastings of both the grand vin and second wines are available, often paired with insights into the château’s sustainability initiatives.
