Despite a long family history in the Port trade, Churchill's was founded as a shipper in 1981, purchasing wines from Quinta do Fojo, Quinta da Manuela, and Quinta da Agua Alta (all belonging to the Borges de Sousa family at the time). In 1999 the company acquired Quinta da Gricha and Quinta do Rio. They have since to started to produce their own Ports.
