Douloufakis Winery is a family-run estate currently managed by Nikos Douloufakis, a third-generation winemaker. Nikos studied oenology in Alba, Italy, and brought back a technical, quality-focused approach that has helped redefine Cretan wine on the modern stage. He is known for championing native varieties, especially Vidiano, and for introducing international varieties like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to the family’s holdings. With his leadership, the winery has expanded its export reach and gained a strong reputation for authenticity and precision.
The Douloufakis family has been making wine in the village of Dafnes since the 1930s, when grandfather Dimitris Douloufakis began crafting local wines using traditional Cretan methods. The estate gradually evolved from bulk production to bottled wines under its own label. A significant transformation occurred in the 1990s when Nikos Douloufakis returned from his oenology studies in Italy and invested in modernising the facilities and elevating the wines. His work has been instrumental in re-establishing Dafnes and the native Vidiano grape as serious contenders in the Greek fine wine scene.
Douloufakis Winery is located in Dafnes, a historic winegrowing village in central Crete, around 15 km south of Heraklion. It lies within the PDO Dafnes zone, an appellation traditionally associated with the red grape Liatiko, but now increasingly recognised for high-altitude white wines. The vineyards are planted on hillside terraces between 350–450 metres above sea level, benefitting from the region’s Mediterranean climate, moderate diurnal swings, and cooling mountain breezes. This elevation plays a critical role in preserving acidity and aromatic complexity in both red and white varieties.
The estate cultivates approximately 30 hectares of vineyards, with a focus on native grapes such as Vidiano, Liatiko, Vilana, and Malvasia di Candia, alongside international varieties like Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Soils are primarily limestone and clay, providing good drainage and promoting healthy vine growth. Viticulture is practiced with a strong emphasis on sustainability and minimal intervention. Douloufakis has been a pioneer in clonal selection and modern vine training in the region, helping ensure precision in ripening and varietal expression. Nikos Douloufakis embraces a fusion of traditional Cretan values and modern oenological practices. Stainless steel is used for fresh, aromatic whites like Aspros Lagos Vidiano, while select whites (e.g., Dafnios Vidiano Barrique) see ageing in oak or acacia barrels to build texture. Reds like Dafnios Liatiko are made with careful maceration and gentle extraction to highlight the grape’s naturally pale colour and spice-driven profile. The estate’s most emblematic wines include the Dafnios Vidiano, a vibrant, stone-fruited white with saline undertones, and the Aspros Lagos Vidiano, sourced from higher-altitude plots and often fermented with wild yeasts. The red Dafnios Liatiko offers a fresh, floral expression of the indigenous variety, while the more structured Enotria and Alargo labels showcase blends and varietals aged in oak. Douloufakis is widely credited with popularising Vidiano as Crete’s flagship white grape.
