Kanzler Vineyards is owned and operated by the Kanzler family. Originally founded by Stephen and Lynda Kanzler, the winery is now run by their son, Alex Kanzler, who serves as winemaker. Alex, who has worked at notable wineries such as Kosta Browne and Landmark Vineyards, focuses on minimal intervention winemaking to showcase the vineyard’s character. His wife, Breauna, oversees marketing and hospitality.

Stephen Kanzler planted the estate vineyard in 1996 on what was once an apple orchard in western Sonoma County. Over time, the site gained recognition for producing high-quality Pinot Noir, attracting attention from producers such as Kosta Browne, who sourced fruit from the vineyard. By 2004, Kanzler Vineyards began bottling its own wines, refining its style and expanding distribution. Today, the family remains deeply involved in both viticulture and winemaking, maintaining a hands-on approach.

Kanzler Vineyards is situated in the Sebastopol Hills, within the Sonoma Coast AVA. This subregion benefits from cool marine influences due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, creating an ideal environment for Pinot Noir. The vineyard is located southwest of Sebastopol, in an area known for its fog-laden mornings and well-draining Goldridge soils.

The Kanzler Estate Vineyard spans approximately 14 acres and is planted predominantly to Pinot Noir, with clones such as Pommard, 115, and 667. The vineyard’s Goldridge sandy loam soils and exposure to ocean breezes allow for slow ripening, leading to balanced acidity and complex flavor development. Sustainable farming practices are emphasized, with a focus on soil health and vine longevity.

Kanzler Vineyards follows a restrained, terroir-driven winemaking approach. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to maintain quality. Fermentation typically includes a portion of whole clusters to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, with a balance between new and neutral wood to highlight fruit purity rather than oak influence.

The estate produces several Pinot Noir expressions, including the Kanzler Estate Reserve and the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, both known for their depth and elegance. Limited production wines from specific vineyard blocks emphasize different aspects of the estate’s terroir. The winery also sources grapes from neighboring sites to create a broader regional expression of Pinot Noir.

Kanzler Vineyards offers private tastings by appointment at its estate in Sebastopol. These tastings provide visitors with an in-depth look at the vineyard and winemaking process, often hosted by a member of the Kanzler family. The experience is designed to be intimate, focusing on education and direct engagement with the winery’s philosophy.
