Pala Vini

Pala Vini is a prominent Sardinian winery based in Serdiana, south of Cagliari, known for producing expressive wines from indigenous grape varieties. Founded in 1950 and long family-run, it entered a new phase in 2024 when it was acquired by the Tolaini family of Tuscany.

As of October 2024, Pala Vini is owned by the Tolaini family, best known for their estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Tuscany. The acquisition was led by Lia Tolaini-Banville, a key figure in the wine import business through Banville Wine Merchants and a long-time collaborator with Pala. The purchase includes Pala’s Serdiana-based estate and its secondary label Mora & Memo. While the operational and winemaking details are still evolving, it is expected that Pala’s established team, including members of the Pala family, will remain involved during the transition. The new ownership signals ambitions to strengthen the winery's international presence while maintaining its Sardinian identity.

Pala was founded in 1950 by Battista Pala and steadily grew in reputation through the efforts of his son, Salvatore “Mario” Pala. Under Mario’s leadership, the estate expanded its vineyard holdings and modernised its facilities. In the 1990s, the decision to bottle wines under their own label marked a turning point, with a clear focus on native varieties and terroir expression. The third generation of the Pala family (Massimiliano, Elisabetta, and Maria Cristina) took active roles in winemaking, marketing, and hospitality, helping to raise the estate’s profile both in Italy and abroad. After decades of close collaboration with Banville, the estate was sold in 2024 to the Tolaini family.

The winery is situated in Serdiana, in southern Sardinia, approximately 20 km inland from the capital city of Cagliari. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cooling coastal breezes, ideal for ripening indigenous grapes while preserving freshness. The vineyards lie within the appellations of Vermentino di Sardegna and Cannonau di Sardegna, and span a variety of soil types and exposures, giving the wines notable complexity and typicity.

Pala manages around 100 hectares of vines across several zones including Serdiana, Ussana, and Senorbì. The vineyards are planted primarily to Sardinian grapes such as Cannonau, Monica, Carignano, Nuragus, and Vermentino. Soils range from clay-limestone to sandy and granitic compositions, offering a mosaic of terroirs. The estate follows sustainable viticultural practices, including dry farming, cover cropping, and minimal chemical intervention. These methods are aimed at preserving biodiversity and ensuring vine balance in the island’s hot, arid conditions.

The winemaking approach at Pala focuses on clarity of expression and varietal purity. Whites are typically fermented in stainless steel to retain aromatic freshness, while reds see a mix of concrete and oak depending on the structure desired. Native yeasts are used when possible, and extraction is handled gently to preserve the natural character of each grape. Under the new ownership, further refinements or investments may be expected, though the foundational philosophy of site-specific, authentic Sardinian wine remains central.

Pala’s portfolio offers a clear window into Sardinia’s native grapes. Highlights include “Soprasole” Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, a bright, saline white; “I Fiori” Nuragus, one of the most distinctive expressions of this rare variety; and “Essentija” Carignano del Sulcis, a structured, age-worthy red from Sardinia’s southwest. Cannonau Riserva and monovarietal bottlings of Monica and Bovale complete a wide-ranging lineup. The wines are well regarded for their precision, balance, and faithful expression of Sardinian identity.

Pala Vini offers a welcoming experience at its winery in Serdiana. Visitors can take guided tours through the vineyards, explore the winemaking facilities, and taste a wide range of wines. Hospitality is a key part of the estate’s identity, often led by members of the family or team with deep local knowledge. With the Tolaini family now at the helm, it’s possible that new tasting experiences, food pairings, or cultural collaborations may be introduced to enhance the estate’s wine tourism offering. Reservations are recommended.
