Grattamacco is owned by Carmelo Claudio Tipa, a Sicilian entrepreneur and industrialist. Tipa also owns Poggio di Soto in Montalcino and Castello Collemassari in Monteccuco. The current winemaker is Luca Marrone, who has been looking after the wines since his first vintage in 2003.
Grattamacco was only the second winery to be established in Bolgheri, and as such, is one of the pioneers of this now famous Tuscan wine region. It was founded in 1977. In 2002 Meletti Cavallari sold the company to Claudio Tipa, the owner of Castello ColleMassari.
Grattamacco’s vineyards are some of the highest in the Bolgheri appellation. They rise on quartzose sandstones and white clays mixed with calcareous marly flysch. Since the late 1990s, Grattamacco has embraced organic farming practices.
Grattamacco is known primarily for its flagship Bolgheri Superiore wine, produced since 1982. L’Alberello is produced in smaller quantities and tends to contain slightly more Cabernet Sauvignon. A Bolgheri Rosso is made, as well as a white wine from Vermentino.
