Fontanavecchia and the ageing potential of Falanghina Beneventana
Added by Paul Caputo on 4 Oct 2020

Falanghina is one of Southern Italy’s key white grape varieties, but has long been considered a poor relation to the likes of Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Perhaps some of this sentiment comes from a lack of association with a famous terroir and the stereotype that it is a simple wine to drink young. Paul Caputo looks at the Fontanavecchia estate’s age worthy wines and their ability to improve over time.

Building Allure: The Changing Faces of Winery Architecture
Added by Paul Caputo on 15 Jul 2020

When Miguel Mateu purchased the Castle of Perelada in 1923, a vast renovation was needed. His dream was to modernise one of Catalonia’s great historical wineries into something fit for the future. Yet such an aspiration is timeless. The need to strike a balance between utility and statements of tradition, between context and innovation, has continuously loomed over every architectural project, and the wine business is no different. What has changed however, is our considerations of how things work, and what things mean; in short perhaps, fashion.

Mastrodomenico - A Family Portrait
Added by Paul Caputo on 13 Jul 2020

Aglianico del Vulture must be considered one of the great terroirs of Italy. Its ruggedly beautiful terrain tumbles from the foothills of Monte Vulture, an ancient and extinct volcano situated in the thick of the Mezzogiorno. At dusk, its talon shaped crater crafts an eerie silhouette against the crimson sky and the little lights of the Vulture’s (vul-tur-aay) hilltop villages flicker beneath the stars. This is a wine that looms large in the hearts and minds of its admirers, for to truly understand the Aglianico grown in these ancient soils, is to understand Basilicata and its culture of struggle.

Maremma Toscana DOC “Monte Calvo” Ciliegiolo
Sassotondo, Tuscany, Italy
2018
Ciliegiolo (100%)
“Energetic but seductive expression of Ciliegiolo. Attractive notes of raspberry and cranberry offer delicate fragrance to the denser flavours of blackberry and morello cherry that linger on the nose. Structured yet elegant, the palate shows racy red fruit, beautiful floral inflections and the authentic vibrancy associated with volcanic soils. Unassuming but brilliant.”

Chianti Classico DOCG “Querciabella”
Querciabella, Tuscany, Italy
2017
“Text book example of great value Chianti Classico. It combines aromas of black cherry, earth and sweet spice with a delicate fragrance of dried flowers and cranberry. Scintillatingly rustic on the palate, this merges energetic red fruit with a streak of garden herb. Lunchtime favourite under a Tuscan sun.”

Sangiovese (50%) Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) Merlot (25%)
“Vibrant red with a delightful perfumed nose. Aromas of violets merge with juicy fruit notes of black cherry, plum and blackberry, while a light touch of vanilla adds some depth. On the palate juicy black fruit and moderate acidity lap against a polished structure of ripe tannin. Really good wine that finishes with attractive floral character.”

Toscana IGP “Turpino”
Toscana IGP “Turpino”
Querciabella, Tuscany, Italy
2015
“Turpino 2015 is an outstanding wine; the nose oozes with deep berry fruit - black cherry and prune are freshened up with raspberry jam. There is a gentle spice that lingers alongside the faint touch of tobacco. Medium bodied, its smooth texture is lifted by elegant, but youthful tannin. Still early days for this wine but there is fabulous balance, harmony and style. Excited to see how this evolves. Delicious finish of blackberry and clove.”
